WOD & DONE hand protection

"We'll take the beating so your hands don't have to."

So claims WOD&DONE: the single-use grips that got your BACK: by protecting your HANDS. keeping your hands.

Right now during the era of COVID and social distancing, lots of us haven't been able to keep up with training to the level we'd like to: gyms are closed, we don't have access to the equipment we typically use, and as hard as we try to maintain a base level of fitness: some of our hands have gotten baby soft along the way (at least...I know mine have!)

Hey All, Katie here!

This week I'm hosting a giveaway with Race Ready Obstacles for a Twister, (giveaway rules here if you want to enter!) and as much fun as it has been building (and playing) on this grip-intensive obstacle, it has definitely made one thing clear: my cardio isn't the only thing that's going to need some work to get back into "race shape"...my hands are going to need some toughening up, too!!

Luckily, I found WOD&DONE last year. They might have started out aiming to serve the CrossFit community, but they fit right in among obstacle course race athletes (I liked 'em so much, I even included them in the 2019 Fierce Gear OCR Holiday Gift Guide.)

So I figured, since I'm currently giving away a grip-intensive obstacle, what better add-on to an already-sweet giveaway, than some grip protection to use while you're playing on it??

Take a look at the following, and you'll learn all about what I think makes WOD&DONE such a cool brand. Then if I've convinced you, enter the giveaway for the chance to win some for yourself, and a Twister!! Trust me, by the time you're done reading this, you definitely will NOT want to miss out on this chance!

WOD&DONE hand protection for grip strength

First Things First: Who Is WOD&DONE?

WOD&DONE is all about hand protection: to protect you while you're working on grip strength, or doing obstacles/exercises that could hurt the skin on your hand or rip any callouses you have. Each of the 3 main products discussed here is precut to conform to specific areas of your hand: your palms, thumbs, and fingers.

WOD&DONE Hand Protection for grip strength

Not only are they insanely sticky and insanely thin: you can also rest assured that they're not gonna trap any nasty bacteria or unpleasant odors, because they're single-use so once you discard them, you never have to deal with them again.

You do the WOD...and then they're done. WOD...and DONE...get it??

Okay I'm Listening. Tell Me More About This Stuff...How Does It Work?

Like I said, the 3 products I am most familiar with are:

✋ WOD-N-DONES
👍 THUMB GUARDS
🤞 FINGER TAPE

...and they can be used as a standalone (which is how I use them), or as a base layer under gloves. They're a great preventative measure to protect your hands from ripping...and they can also protect your hands for after you have ripped, but still want to keep going (...because we all know how it feels to rip our hands on Day 1 of a Race Weekend, but still want to go out and race on Day 2!)

But I Thought Callouses Are A Good Thing Because They Make Your Hands Tough...Why Would I Want To Protect Them From That?

Great question! And the answer is....You don't: at least, not necessarily. This is a somewhat ambiguous concept with lots of differing points of view: some people feel it's best to develop the toughest callouses possible, while others adhere to various maintenance regimens.

Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum: it's likely that when you are just starting to ramp up your training, your skin will "give up" before your muscles do. And there's nothing more frustrating - and personally demoralizing - than having to end a workout early because your hands have an "ouchie." Personally, what I often do is start my workout using my bare hands (to work on toughening up my skin), until I get to a certain point when I think it's best to add the WODNDONES to prevent any ripping. That way I can still build up my hands, but don't have to worry about a major backfire: in the form of a deep, painful rip. *Yowza.*

How Do I Put Them On? Why Does It Look Like It Has Tails??

Check out the video below, and all will become clear!

    A few quick tips:

✋Make sure your hands are completely dry before applying (trust me...if you're sweaty, they don't stick. This part is worth making sure you do it right!)
✋ Do the pre-rips in the WODNDONES the way the instructions say to do them....even if it seems confusing or you're not sure that you actually need to do all that work ahead of time. It makes them a breeze to actually put on, vs. without the pre-rips is more difficult.
✋ Be sure to slowly extend the tape over the surface of your skin as you're removing the tape backing: you're supposed to stretch it out, and it will fit much better this way!
✋ Experiment with different ways to secure the tails, to see what works best for you.

...But If WODNDONES Were Initially Made For CrossFit, Are They Good For What An OCR Athlete Needs? Are They Just For Training...Or Would They Actually Hold Up On Race Day?

To put it simply, I'll quote WOD&DONE directly:

    They're tough as $#!%.

The grips were already designed to be able to handle whatever you threw at them. But to give OCR athletes some peace of mind, and to help WODNDONE's expansion from inside the CrossFit box to outside on a muddy obstacle course, they developed a little something extra just for us.

obstacle course race athletes wearing WODNDONE hand protection grips at an event

To make up for the fact that OCR events are often muddy and/or wet...and/or last quite a bit longer than the typical usage occasion: WOD&DONE created a natural, alcohol-based liquid adhesive to lengthen the lifespan of the grips.

When applied to the skin before putting on any hand protection, this adhesive makes the already-sticky-grips even stickier: helping to ensure your *grip* will *stick* with you...from the first AROO! at the Starting Line all the way through the Fire Jump at the Finish.

And while the liquid adhesive was initially developed for OCR it has found its way into many different applications; for example: when exercising in extreme conditions, or to put on in preparation for of a sweat sesh that you anticipate might get "extra sweaty."

Not everyone seems to need the adhesive (which is part of why you won't currently see it listed for sale on the site), but if you are interested, there is plenty in stock for you to try! It should be given to you as an option to add on at the time of purchase (and if it's not, just send them an email...they usually respond lickety-split!)

I Might Be Interested In Giving WOD&DONE A Try, But I Need A Little More Convincing. What Makes Them Stand Out From All The Other Guys?

I am so glad you asked. There are a ton of reasons, and they all weave together to make this nice little story that comes full circle. Check it out!

WHAT MAKES WOD&DONE STAND OUT FROM COMPETITORS:

      They Feel Good

✋ Material so thin, it feels like wearing "nothing at all"

They're "made to move with you," because they're designed/precut specifically for your hands

and because they're designed specifically for your hands, it makes them more effective...

      They're Effective

✋ Sticky as heck. Once these things go on, they're staying on

Versatile: they work to help you before you rip (prevention), while you're working to build up your grip strength, and after you rip (by speeding up the healing process)

      ✋ Superior Protection

✋ You can put your trust in them, because you know the protection is quality

Even if you do rip they still help you: keeping your hands well-protected to speed up the healing process

      ✋ Hygienic

      ✋ Single-use & self-adhesive...no build-up of bacteria or nasty smells

Water & sweat resistant: keeps germs out!

      ...Pretty neat, huh?

      So there you have it!

Have you ever tried WOD&DONE? What do you typically do to prevent rips/heal them??

I feel like this article was written for me! I’ve been struggling to find gloves I really like for OCR events and have definitely been concerned about my hands ripping and callouses. I will definitely give these a try!

Very informative. I definitely need the WOD&DONE, I currently have some cheap athletic tape that is annoying to have on a injured (cut) finger.

Definely checking these out! I went through a phase where I hated the callouses and tried to avoid them. Then I heard bare hands are better and gloves actually weaken your grip so I stayed to get away from gloves. My callouses became a point of pride like “Grrr look how tough my workouts are!” And then I ripped one. Holy mother of God there is no pain like it. And in case you forget what it felt like when it ripped your hands are kind enough to remind you every WOD thereafter. Quarantine has been hard because I haven’t been able to do my usual heavy carries and I actually find myself developing those callouses now that I’m back at the gym. We can’t use chalk because of Covid and my hands are sliding constantly with the summer heat. Thanks Katie, totally checking these out!
